The crankshaft rear oil seal is one of those parts that earns little attention until it fails, and when it does, the consequences range from an oily bell housing to a compromised clutch and a significant engine oil loss. This Genuine Land Rover crankshaft rear oil seal for the 300Tdi engine is the correct replacement for the seal that lives at the rearmost end of the crankshaft, where it exits the engine block and interfaces with the flywheel housing. Its job is to prevent engine oil from migrating rearward past the crankshaft journal and into the bell housing. When this seal hardens, cracks, or wears, the resulting leak can coat the flywheel, contaminate the clutch disc on manual transmission applications, and leave a telltale oil film on the underside of the engine and transmission area. The 300Tdi is a 2.5-liter (152.5 cubic inch) four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that powered the Defender, Discovery I, and Range Rover Classic through much of the 1990s. It is a beloved engine with a strong following, and keeping one leak-free means sourcing the right components from the right source. This Genuine Land Rover seal is built to the original factory specification, ensuring correct dimensions, proper lip material, and the correct interference fit with the crankshaft journal. Proper installation requires a clean journal surface and a seal driver or suitable sleeve to press the seal squarely into its housing without distorting the lip. Many experienced technicians recommend allowing the seal to sit overnight after installation so the lip can fully conform to the crankshaft surface before the engine is started.
