Skid plates are essential equipment for anyone planning to take their Sprinter off road. We are not just talking about extreme rock crawling. Even mild trails can hide obstacles that are difficult to spot and capable of causing serious damage to the critical systems underneath your van. In our view, the Engine Skid Plate and Rear Differential Skid Plate are the highest priorities, followed closely by the Transmission Skid Plate. While the transmission does not hang as low as the engine and is therefore somewhat more protected, it is particularly vulnerable during breakover situations. Because the transmission is located near the center of the vehicle, it can be exposed when cresting a hill, crossing a berm, or navigating uneven terrain. In these scenarios, the middle of the vehicle can contact obstacles even when the front and rear clear them successfully. Pro Line (with UHMW) The optional Pro Line adds a layer of UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) over the aluminum skid. UHMW is an extremely tough, low friction material, so in exactly those breakover moments the skid slides across the obstacle instead of catching on it, keeping the van moving.
